One Manchester, which provides housing and community services to the more than 12,000 properties it owns in Manchester, hired Ground Heat to revamp its heating system. Specifically, the housing association wanted the system To rectify the energy issues and moderate the ever-increasing bills, Ground Heat proposed a Vaillant integrated renewable system The organisation also required help to prove the system’s viability and to obtain funding; we assisted by providing a feasibility study, education and training. We removed the electric storage heaters and replaced the ineffective system with validated heat pumps and the innovative Heliotherm system. This enabled a direct comparison between the old system and the new heat pump technology, thus enabling the housing association better to understand the benefits.
Our engineers installed 10 Vaillant Geotherm mini heat pumps and worked with Heliotherm, an Austrian manufacturer, to develop a new 1–6 kW inverter driven ground source heat pump specifically designed to supply individual apartment heat generation for multi-occupancy dwellings. After thorough testing and refining, the Heliotherm system provides a fully controllable remote access system that eliminates the need for engineer attendance in 99% of queries concerning the new system.
Considering energy and the environment
The electric storage heaters were costing residents about £800 to £1000 per year for heating their apartments. During our feasibility study, however, we realised that residents were not heating most rooms because of the cost. This is not only detrimental to the residents but also the property, as the lukewarm temperatures promote damp and mould. Our new system will see bills diminish drastically to about £250 to £300 per year, thus ensuring that every resident can heat their home sufficiently. The One Manchester housing association is also saving 10.83 tonnes of CO2 per year, thus improving its stock credentials.
Both the Vaillant and the Heliotherm units have provided energy at a reduced cost from the previous system. The Heliotherm units benefit from a 365-day monitoring service. This gives the client the additional security that, if an issue should occur, we will know about it before the resident. Residents were delighted with the new systems; many wrote to thank us for helping to heat their homes.
